GCSP – 01/08/2012

One of the many criticisms of the church today is it is filled with hypocrites. My response to that is, “Well come on and join us, there’s always room for one more!” There is no denying that hypocrites attend and join churches; because we all display that trait in varying degrees at one time or another.

The Greek word from which we get our English word hypocrite was originally used in the ancient theatre. In the ancient theatre the players in the plays and operas held masks over their faces like you see in the old Victorian era movies. They were pretending to be someone they were not. We call them actors today but the Greeks called them hypocrites. It wasn’t meant to be a derogatory term like we use it today, but it was simply describing someone who was pretending to be someone other than their true self.

In a certain measure, when we hide our feelings and our struggles from those who could be of help and encouragement, we are being a hypocrite. We are putting on a false front, in essence wearing a mask, when we hide what is happening on the inside. I am not saying that we must reveal every issue we have on the inside, but when you come to church it should be a safe haven. It should be a place where you can share your heart with those who are willing and able to help.

The reason that those outside the church tend to consider it to be full of hypocrites is that many put on the mask of happiness and holiness when their life is anything but happy and holy outside these walls. For some reason we feel as if we need to transform into super Christians once we walk in the doors; we can’t allow anyone to see our faults and struggles in the house of God after all. To which I respond, if not here, where?

The problem with playing the part of a hypocrite is that some of us get very good at it. There are many actors in the movies and television that I really enjoy watching. Often when you hear news reports on the personal lives of some of these actors you discover an entirely different person. The ideal husband and father on TV is in real life an abusive and vulgar man. The pure and innocent girl next door in the movies is in real life a drug addict and lives a totally immoral lifestyle.

Beloved, even though the examples I just gave are extreme, we should not be this way with our church family. The church should be a “mask-free” zone. We are commanded to “rejoice with those who rejoice and weep with those who weep” according to Romans 12:15closeRomans 12:15

but how can we do that when we don’t know what’s going on in your life? You are in essence keeping others from obeying God’s Word when you wear you mask.

Well, let’s get on track with the sermon. One day soon, there is coming a man who will be the hypocrite of all hypocrites. He is a man who will captivate the entire world. He will put on the false front of being the man who can finally initiate world peace. He will say and do all of the right things for a period of time and it will appear as if there is nothing he cannot accomplish on the world’s stage. But a stage it will indeed be.

Let’s pray.

There is actually quite a bit of material in Scripture concerning the Antichrist but most of it is in very figurative and obscure language. Daniel speaks of him in great length, Paul devotes about a third of his second letter to the Thessalonian church to this man, and Jesus mentions him in His Olivet Discourse besides what we have in the Book of Revelation; and there is more than what we have just read in Revelation. There are some other brief mentions of this man of sin, or man of lawlessness, scattered throughout other Books of the Bible, and we may refer to some as we go, but we will primarily spend our time here in Revelation, in the Book of Daniel, in the Gospel of Matthew, and in the Book of 2 Thessalonians as we try to glean what we can about this coming world ruler; and as you probably discerned by the “Part 1” in the title of this sermon, it may take a little time to figure it all out.

So let’s begin with the foundation of his description here in our current text and then we will jump around a bit.

We first see the dragon, who we discovered in 12:9 is none other than Satan. The picture here is that Satan is in essence summoning this beast, who even though he is not given the name in this passage I will show you that this beast is indeed the Antichrist. The fact that John’s vision depicts him coming from the sea is very much debated, as is just about everything in the Book of Revelation, but the debates are from the deluding influence of Satan. I have hopefully convinced you from our study thus far through this wonderful Book of the Bible that it is not nearly as complicated as people make it out to be, even when the language is as figurative as we are looking at right now.

Scripture uses the metaphor of the sea to represent the realm of satanic activity in several places. Job 26:12-13closeJob 26:12-13

is probably the most descriptive:

“In that day the Lord will punish Leviathan the fleeing serpent, with His fierce and great and mighty sword, even Leviathan the twisted serpent; and He will kill the dragon who lives in the sea.” Again, even though the language is figurative, we can rightly conclude that Leviathan and the dragon represent Satan.

When using the term “sea” or “seashore” (as it is translated in the NASB) in this rendering we are most likely referring to the abyss, or the bottomless pit, that we have already studied in several passages in Revelation; all of which clearly showed them to be the place where many demons dwell or are imprisoned for the time being. This will also be the place where Satan and all of his demons will be kept during the Millennial Kingdom, but we will have to wait until chapter 20 to deal with that.

John’s use of the word “beast” to describe the Antichrist, and later in this chapter the false prophet, is indicative of how savage and cruel their reign on earth will eventually be; but not in the beginning. As I mentioned in the introduction, the Antichrist will be the hypocrite of all hypocrites. Initially he will appear to be a man of peace and a man of reconciliation between Israel and the rest of the world.

So what’s the issue with the horns and heads and diadems, and what does the leopard and bear and lion represent? And why is Satan depicted as having seven diadems in 12:3 and the Antichrist has ten diadems in 13:1?

Bear with me as we are going to be jumping around quite a bit and going back and forth to put all the pieces together. Put a marker in Revelation or hold your place there and turn with me to the Book of Daniel. I will not deal with every minute detail in Daniel but will emphasize the issues that help us with the initial information we are covering in Revelation. As the Antichrist is dealt with in more detail later in the Book of Revelation we will again come back and fill in more of what Daniel has to say at that time.

The order of these figurative animals, the lion, the bear and the leopard, are reversed in Daniel’s account when compared with John’s account in Revelation but they represent the same things. We must remember that Daniel is looking at what these animals represent as a future manifestation and John is looking at history. So the order that Daniel sees is how they will come chronologically from before they come to pass and John sees them chronologically from how they already happened.

The dream of Nebuchadnezzar plays into this as well, so let’s back up a few chapters and refresh our memories with that account before I start explaining what this all means.

Even though Nebuchadnezzar is seeing a statue with gold, silver, bronze and iron, and Daniel and John’s visions are dealing with a lion, a bear, a leopard, and a dreadful beast, the same interpretation is in view and they represent the exact same events in history and the yet future. The great world kingdoms or empires are in view. Daniel bears this out in a general sense in 7:17 as an angel gives an explanation of Daniel’s vision to him.

The golden head of Nebuchadnezzar’s statue and the lion in both visions represents the kingdom of Babylon, the very first major world empire. This empire is the present day reality of Daniel as he wrote. The breast and arms of silver correlate with the bear, and they represent the second world empire known as the Medo-Persian Empire. Daniel was around for the beginning of this as well. The belly and thighs of bronze correlate with the leopard, and they represent the third great world power and that was the Grecian Empire of Alexander the Great.

And before I move on just let me show you the greatness and the accuracy of God’s Word. Daniel wrote this before Greece was even a known entity in the world yet he describes their future world dominance perfectly. The Grecian Empire was known not only for its vastness but for how swiftly Alexander conquered the world, represented by the speed of a leopard. But also, if you know your history, Alexander died at a very young age and he divided his kingdom among his four generals, which is also represented in Daniel’s vision by the leopard having four heads; pretty amazing stuff if you ask me.

I won’t take the time but if you want even more confirmation on this read Daniel 8closeDaniel 8

Daniel's Vision of the Ram and the Goat
8:1 In the third year of the reign of King Belshazzar a vision appeared to me, Daniel, after that which appeared to me at the first. 2 And I saw in the vision; and when I saw, I was in Susa the capital, which is in the province of Elam. And I saw in the vision, and I was at the Ulai canal. 3 I raised my eyes and saw, and behold, a ram standing on the bank of the canal. It had two horns, and both horns were high, but one was higher than the other, and the higher one came up last. 4 I saw the ram charging westward and northward and southward. No beast could stand before him, and there was no one who could rescue from his power. He did as he pleased and became great.
5 As I was considering, behold, a male goat came from the west across the face of the whole earth, without touching the ground. And the goat had a conspicuous horn between his eyes. 6 He came to the ram with the two horns, which I had seen standing on the bank of the canal, and he ran at him in his powerful wrath. 7 I saw him come close to the ram, and he was enraged against him and struck the ram and broke his two horns. And the ram had no power to stand before him, but he cast him down to the ground and trampled on him. And there was no one who could rescue the ram from his power. 8 Then the goat became exceedingly great, but when he was strong, the great horn was broken, and instead of it there came up four conspicuous horns toward the four winds of heaven.
9 Out of one of them came a little horn, which grew exceedingly great toward the south, toward the east, and toward the glorious land. 10 It grew great, even to the host of heaven. And some of the host and some of the stars it threw down to the ground and trampled on them. 11 It became great, even as great as the Prince of the host. And the regular burnt offering was taken away from him, and the place of his sanctuary was overthrown. 12 And a host will be given over to it together with the regular burnt offering because of transgression, and it will throw truth to the ground, and it will act and prosper. 13 Then I heard a holy one speaking, and another holy one said to the one who spoke, “For how long is the vision concerning the regular burnt offering, the transgression that makes desolate, and the giving over of the sanctuary and host to be trampled underfoot?” 14 And he said to me, “For 2,300 evenings and mornings. The Interpretation of the Vision
15 When I, Daniel, had seen the vision, I sought to understand it.
The legs of iron and to a partial extent the dreadful beast represent the fourth world empire which was Rome. The reason I say to a partial extent is that the future world empire is also depicted by this dreadful beast, which is why many call the world kingdom of the Antichrist the revived Roman Empire.

Daniel speaks more of this future world empire and of its ruler

Again, this fourth kingdom, or dreadful beast, represents both the old Roman Empire and the future world empire of the Antichrist. For the future world empire there will initially be ten kingdoms that will represent the cumulative nations of the world. You can speculate all you want but since we do not know the exact timing of when these events take place it is difficult if not impossible to bring our current world situation into complete view, even though the proposed European Union over the last few decades has pretty much always had a goal of the ten great economic powers of the world to unite. Whether that is coincidence or a sign that we are getting close to the culmination of these events will play out soon enough.

The Antichrist is depicted as the “little horn” in Daniel. This tells us that he will somewhat come out of nowhere. He won’t be the ruler of one of the ten world powers of the time but will come up from a certain measure of obscurity. He will rise to power over these ten powers and eventually, as we have already mentioned, remove three of the ten kings from this union, leaving seven. Some say there is a contradiction here because when you include the little horn you actually have eight left, but that assumes that the Antichrist is on equal footing with the other seven kings and that is not the case. The Antichrist will be the one sovereign ruler with the other seven being under his command, and these other seven will fall in line more than likely because of how the Antichrist subdues the three that are pulled out by the roots.

The last phrase of verse 25 puts a time frame on the rule of Antichrist; it says the world “will be given into his hands for a time, times, and half a time.” The word translated as “time” in the Hebrew can refer to other lengths of time but its primary meaning is what we refer to as a year. There is a slight difference between the Hebrew calendar year and our current calendar year which we will deal with in more detail at a later time, when we break down Daniel’s seventy weeks, but the primary issue is the Hebrew calendar consists of twelve equal 30-day months, giving it 360 days, while our months vary in length with a total of 365 days, with an additional day inserted every four years. The Hebrew calendar also adjusts to keep up with the exact rotation of the earth but in a much different way than our current Leap Year set up. The bottom line is that Daniel is telling us the Antichrist will have sovereign rule over the earth for three and a half years. He will have a measure of shared power for longer than that while he is still masquerading as the man of peace, but his reign of terror and forced world domination will last three and a half years.

This reign of terror is spoken of by Jesus in the Gospel of Matthew, so let’s turn there for a moment but hold your place in Daniel.

The beginning of the three and a half years will be marked by a specific event known as the Abomination of Desolation, which Daniel also mentions. I want to comment a little bit on what Jesus says but I want to show you what Daniel says since Jesus refers us to him, so holding your place in Matthew turn with me in your Bibles back to Daniel.

We will deal with the seventy weeks down the road a little, as I already mentioned, but we get a little explanation of the Antichrist’s rule in verse 27. Briefly, the “weeks” mentioned here each represent seven years not seven days, which we will also deal with later; most of you are probably already on information overload and I still have much to give before we are done this morning.

The picture here is that the Antichrist will in essence put on the mask of being Israel’s friend and protector. He will sign some sort of peace treaty that will be designed to last for seven years. Part of this agreement will include the rebuilding of the temple in Jerusalem, which will take place during the first three and a half years of the Tribulation. At least for a brief time the nation of Israel will reinstitute the ritualistic sacrifices and offerings in the temple but at the mid-point of the Tribulation the Antichrist will remove his mask and reveal his true character; this moment in time is what Jesus calls the Abomination of Desolation.

You can let go of Daniel for today and get back to Matthew for a few moments.

Jesus speaks of the Antichrist as “standing in the holy place” in verse 15. The Apostle Paul gets a little more descriptive by saying “that he takes his seat in the temple of God, displaying himself as being God” in 2 Thessalonians 2:4close2 Thessalonians 2:4

. The Abomination is the Antichrist himself but it is also what he does by declaring to the world that he is God. Now I haven’t touched on this yet but it should be painfully obvious that the Antichrist is a man completely possessed and empowered by Satan.

The Jewish temple has an outer court which is open for anyone to enter, a court of women which was open to the Jewish women, a court of men which was open to Jewish men. The court of the priests, also sometimes known as the Holy Place, which was where the priests were allowed to enter to offer the sacrifices, and the Holy Place or the Holy of Holies where the high priest was allowed to enter once a year on the Day of Atonement, and even then only after tremendous rituals of purification inwardly and outwardly. This Holy Place was where God would come down once a year to accept or reject the sacrifices made by the people; nobody was allowed to enter other than the high priest once a year.

Whether or not the future temple will follow this same calendar of events and restrictions remains to be seen but you would have to assume so. If indeed this is the case, as the high priest enters the Holy of holies at this time he will be shocked to find the Antichrist sitting on the Mercy Seat proclaiming to be God, breaking the covenant with Israel, and starting his reign of terror and slaughter most likely by killing the high priest himself.

So when Jesus speaks of the urgency of fleeing to the mountains He is not fooling around. More than likely the Antichrist will have his troops in place ready to begin the slaughter of the Jews at his command when the Abomination takes place (vs. 16-21).

Let’s briefly look at what Paul has to say concerning Antichrist. Turn with me in your Bibles to the Book of 2 Thessalonians.

Paul had already taught the Thessalonians on the end times and the Antichrist but they had been misled somewhere along the way. They thought they had missed the rapture, which Paul describes in 1 Thessalonians, and Paul assures them by telling them again that since Antichrist was not yet here then the rapture had not taken place yet either; the apostasy (the same thing that Jesus calls the Abomination) cannot come until the rapture has already taken place.

Paul then gives more details concerning Antichrist which correlate with what we have seen in Daniel and Revelation, and which we will most likely refer back to as we get deeper into the activity of Antichrist in future studies.

Let’s finally get back to the Book of Revelation and start to wrap things up for this week.

Revelation 13:2-4closeRevelation 13:2-4

We will hold off on digging into the detail for this week, but let me point out some general truths.

Verse 2 shows us that the kingdom of the Antichrist will in essence be like the combined world powers of ancient Babylon, Medo-Persia, Greece, and Rome.

Verse 2 also reveals what I mentioned earlier that his power will come directly from Satan.

Miraculous power will either be displayed or a worldwide deception will be perfectly accomplished, as the Antichrist will either be raised from the dead or the world will be convinced he rose from the dead, causing the world to follow him wholeheartedly.

Satan and the beast will be worshipped by the unsaved world for a period of time that will initiate the worldwide persecution of the Jews and of those who come to Christ during the Tribulation.

There is much more to disseminate from these verses but it will have to wait until next time. But I can’t leave you on this horrendous note. I have subjected you to a truckload of filth in essence by only talking about the Antichrist.

The only way we can handle this and properly process this is because we know the true Christ. The true Christ came to save us from all of this. The true Christ has provided us with the opportunity to escape even being on the earth when all of this takes place. The true Christ died on the Cross to pay for our sins. The true Christ did indeed rise again from the dead. The true Christ provided us with direct access to God the Father so we no longer had a need for the temple and for a high priest and for the Holy of Holies. The true Christ is our High Priest now and forevermore!

But, if the true Christ is not the Lord of your life, then Satan is. And if the rapture of the church happens as soon as the Bible appears to indicate, you will be left behind and be subject to dealing with all that I have talked about this morning. The good news is you can confess Jesus as Lord right now and can then rest assured that none of this be in your future.

Let’s pray.
